I was in a 430,000 mile 1999 Crown Vic P71 taxi a few days ago. It was a local sheriffs cruiser before it was bought to be a taxi and all on the original engine and a probably rebuilt transmission.
After 17 years of being used as first a police car, then a taxi this thing still felt extremely solid and sound. It sometimes amazes me how well these things hold together.

Grand Marquis > All other Panthers. More luxurious than the Vic, but less expensive than the Town Car.
And it was the only thing sold by Mercury from 2002 until the brand’s eventual demise altogether.

I have a very high tolerance for interior aesthetics, and even I’ve gotta say damn, that airbag is ugly .

And you can get ‘em looking half decent, too.

I actually like that one a lot better. I find the ’05+ one to be jarringly chunky, as it doesn’t really match the rest of the interior. It looks like it came out of a completely different car (or a truck).

I find the newer one to be a better ergonomic fit, and it reminds me less of the outgoing F-650. Although the 96-97 4 spoke wheel was the best.

For some reason I prefer the early square airbag wheel

There’s only one cool Panther car. And it’s not made by FoMoCo.

Didn’t they still sell the Mountaineer and Sable too until 2008 or something?

It works well with the early aerobody interior, but I find it horribly incongruous on the 95s.

Not up here. And actually I was a bit wrong, they pulled out of Canada in 99, not 02

I had two panthers, a 2001 Town Car that was a peach and a 2006 Town Car that was a huge pile of shit. They're big and heavy and inefficient and slow and the interior packaging is from the 1980s but they were fun for a while. But maybe not twice. I have a Camry now would never go back.

My dad bought a 03' p71 from a friend and it was honestly one of the worst cars I’ve ever drivin.. Terrible steering and brakes no power from the v8... It did do awesome burnouts even being underpowered tho.
I eventually parted it out and sold the chassis to some guy doing a rat rod build.
